This Roman Gladius sword is a good example of a close quarter combat sword based on a Roman distillation of designs stemming from and effectively used by the ancient Greeks and Celts. In fact, the shape of this sword is reminiscent of the Roman’s take on the Celtic Kladimos sword.

After taking this sword out of the box, and the sheath that comes with it, it is easy to imagine how it was used in battle. The Romans would start with a spear which was thrown first, and then follow it up with a rush into close quarters, holding a shield in one hand and the Gladius in the other.

The Golan Gladius feels very comfortable to hold and I was well-pleased with my purchase.

‘Gladius’, by the way, is simply is the Latin word for sword, although has come to mean a specific type of sword.

Great sword, very light weight and easy to manoeuvre. Also came really damn sharp, like razor sharp. Love it.
