This Sgian Dubh is made from a genuine Stag Antler . It has a carbon steel blade and a soft leather sheath. Every aspect is handmade. The name comes from the Gaelic sgian dubh meaning “black knife”, it is also suggested that “black” means secret, or hidden. This is based on the stories associated with the Highland custom of depositing weapons at the entrance to a house prior to entering as a guest.
Despite this practice, a small twin edged-dagger, (‘Mattucashlass’), concealed under the armpit, combined with a smaller knife, (‘Sgian dubh’), concealed in the hose or boot, would offer an element of defense or of surprise if employed in attack.
Carbon steel holds its edge much longer than stainless steel and is easier to sharpen. But it is not stainless and will have spots of oxidation on the blade.
These small handmade knives are unique and make an interesting addition to anyone’s knife collection.
